In the Trenches - Women Can Do Anything! | Mildura Intimate Portraiture

For Yelta’s Kelly Canning, big machines are part of everyday life.

The 32 year old earthmover, labourer and machine operator  was destined to enter the field - and did so at 16 - with her Dad owning All State Earthworks.

She does have a diploma in Occupational Health and Safety but being more hands on lured her back outside.

“I prefer being in the trench in the dirt or on a machine/truck etc,” Kelly said.

“Every day is different but I mainly lay pipes for water mains and operate machines - tippers and trucks, a step deck or water cart".

“I love working outside and love that each day is something different.”

Kelly said being in earthmoving doesn’t come without challenges, especially when she needs to go to the toilet. She said working with men in general can test her.

But it’s an occupation she would recommend to other females.

She would love to have more girl power in her workforce - and even working alongside her - for the social benefits.

“I think girls have more patience and maybe are not as confident so can be a bit more careful and slower in what they have to do,” Kelly said.

When it’s tools down Kelly is back to being a mum of two, with a step daughter as well so there is never a dull moment.

“But I wouldn’t have any other way,” she said.
